Anyway, back to our story: the canisters are a puzzle because they were made with a short-lived GE technology called a pallophotophone, which immediately predated sound motion pictures. Think the Betamax VCR, only much, much more fleeting. And so, upon realizing what the canisters were, archivist Chris Hunter realized there was no machine in the world that could play them.
Long story short, working with a former GE engineer named John Schneiter, and Russ DeMuth, a current GE techie with multiple patents of his own, they researched, looked at old photos, scoured eBay for parts and built as close a replica to the pallophotophone as possible. And unlocked these voices from eight decades of undeserved silence. "I got goosebumps when I heard it," Schneiter told the Albany Times-Union.
